These qualifications include a basic degree in psychology, a professional qualification (masters) in clinical psychology and a further professional doctorate in clinical psychology. Dr Kennedy is an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Chartered Clinical Psychologist.
Dr Kennedy is also a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Therapists (BABCP).
Dr Kennedy trained at Bangor, Leicester and Liverpool Universities in the UK and at Duke University in the US. She has worked in the National Health Service for over 20 years, specialising in mental health and in learning disability.
Her National Health Service career included heading learning disability services in Devon and psychological services on the Isle of Wight and she now practices privately, specialising in e-mail therapy, training others, and providing supervision.
She has most recently been researching PTSD, dissociation and the effects of trauma, including working with trauma. In the past she has published on obesity and has been interested in personal relationships of people with disabilities and in the mental wellbeing of new mothers. She has presented at national and international conferences, mostly on the topics of dissociation and conferences.
Her orientation is based around cognitive behaviour therapy techniques and theory. She receives supervision regularly from respected clinicians in the field.
She is quite passionate about interacting with other people and collaborating to achieve positive changes in their lives. She finds this often leads to reflection on her own life and to positive changes there also. She derives intellectual and social stimulation and reward from conducting therapy in various modes, including e-mail therapy.
